In June 2024, the Kiawah Conservancy's collaborative project with the Gullah Geechee Chamber of Commerce and sweetgrass basket weavers reached an exciting milestone. After two harvest days with dedicated staff and volunteers, over 100 bundles of sweetgrass were harvested and distributed to the basket weavers of Johns Island and Mt. Pleasant.
We are ready to harvest again this 2024 growing season and need your help! There will be five harvesting days scheduled in August and September. The harvest will take place early in the morning while there is still dew on the plants. The process is simple but labor intensive. It involves hand pulling portions of grass from the base of the plant. Volunteer assistance is crucial to harvesting the grass and helping preserve this cultural tradition.
