Join the Kiawah Conservancy and the Town of Kiawah Island for a week focused on our bobcats! Here is the week-long schedule of events:
Tuesday, Oct 11:
3:00 pm – Hope for Kiawah's Bobcats: Join the Kiawah Conservancy and Town of Kiawah Island as we kick off Kiawah Island Bobcat Week with a panel discussion and Q&A on bobcats and our ecosystem, bobcat research on Kiawah Island, the harmful effects of second generation anticoagulant rodenticides, and alternative pest management methods and best practices. This is also a great opportunity to sign or resign the Bobcat Guardian Pledge. A flight demonstration from Birds of Prey will conclude the event. Kiawah Island Town Hall
Wednesday, Oct 12:
2pm – Understanding Lynx in the Food Chain:
Kiawah Island’s historically healthy bobcat populations began to decline in 2017, due primarily to increased mortality rates caused by second-generation anticoagulant (SGA) poisoning. Numbers declined from a historic population of 30-35 bobcats down to as few as 10. Bobcats serve a critical role in the Kiawah ecosystem by managing populations of rats, mice, and deer on the island. Because of their vital importance to the island, biologists have been researching these animals for more than 20 years.
Town Biologist, Jim Jordan, will present historical and current data from the Town’s Bobcat GPS tracking study, and discuss the impacts of anticoagulant rodenticides on the Kiawah ecosystem, including positive signs that the island’s bobcat population is recovering thanks to voluntary efforts under the Bobcat Guardian Program. Kiawah Island Town Hall
Thursday, Oct 13:
9am – Walk with Meghan: Meghan Keating is a graduate student working with the Town of Kiawah and the Kiawah Conservancy to study how the island’s bobcats are being affected by second-generation anticoagulant (SGA) poisoning. This will be an hour long walk at The Preserve to discuss Bobcat habitat, livability and how the Community can support the Town with their initiatives.
