The Kiawah Conservancy, Kiawah Island Golf Resort, and South Carolina Department of Natural Resource's Oyster Restoration Program (SCORE) have built manufactured wire reefs (MWR) for a marsh restoration project at Mingo Point at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. We are excited to announce that with the help of our combined staff and many wonderful volunteers, we met our goal to build 130 MWRs! A big thank you to all involved!
On Thursday, August 1 at 10 am, volunteers will meet at Mingo Point at Kiawah Island Golf Resort to complete the final step of this project -- installation and deployment of the MWRs into the marsh. We need your help!
Volunteers must be 16 years or older and wear close-toed shoes that will stay secured on your feet in the mud. Prepare to get muddy! We will work together to transfer each MWR, deploy them onto the shoreline, and lock them in with rebar. Safety gear, bug spray, water, and other necessary materials will be provided.
Along with the install, we'll hear from SCORE, the Conservancy, and the Resort about the importance and significance of this project. Come join us and see first hand how we have all worked together to positively impact this area of marsh.
Please email Sean Cannon (sean@kiawahconservancy.org) with any questions.

SCORE is a community-based oyster restoration program that depends on volunteers to help restore oyster reefs and is one of the only programs in SC restoring oyster reefs strictly for the ecological benefits they provide. When you participate with the SCORE program, you can restore valuable habitat while also learning about the ecological importance of oyster reefs and the habitat that oysters create.
