The Kiawah Conservancy and Kiawah Island Golf Resort have partnered with DNR's South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement Program (SCORE) to begin a new restoration project right here on Kiawah Island. We are in need of volunteers to help construct the Manufactured Wire Reefs (MWR) that will be installed within the marsh at Mingo Point. MWR are an alternative substrate for oyster larvae to land and grow on. Our goal is to build 100 wire reefs to be installed later this year!
Volunteers will help to cut, bend, and fasten galvanized wire to form a reef structure using power tools. This hands-on project requires standing for the duration of the event, lifting heavy materials, and is physically demanding. Close-toed shoes are mandatory. Safety gear and other needed materials will be provided. Sunscreen and bug spray will also be available. Please bring your own reusable water bottle as a water refill station will be on site.
Join us on May 9 and June 12 from 10 am-1 pm and give back to the environment in a hands-on way, learn new skills, and meet other like-minded volunteers!
Please register below for the date(s) you are available.
SCORE is a community-based oyster restoration program that depends on volunteers to help restore oyster reefs and is one of the only programs in SC restoring oyster reefs strictly for the ecological benefits they provide. When you participate with the SCORE program, you can restore valuable habitat while also learning about the ecological importance of oyster reefs and the habitat that oysters create.
